Its idea is “a grown-ups’ home on Miyajima”: stay as if you had a weekend house on the island. In practice that means a relaxed, self-service style rather than a ryokan’s set rituals. There is no kaiseki, no staff coming in to lay out futons; you eat at a buffet, help yourself to toiletries from an amenity bar at the front desk, and spend the evening in the lounge or on the wooden terrace with its hanging chairs and dome tent. Staff at the front desk act as island concierges.

The address is its other strength. It is a few steps from the pier, so there is no luggage to haul, and you are at the start of the waterfront walk to the shrine.

The three room types

Machiya no Bessō (town): the standard room, styled after Miyajima’s old merchant houses; twin or triple.

Umi no Bessō (sea): rooms with the sea breeze of the Seto Inland Sea; twin or triple.

Yama no Bessō (mountain): the “hideaway” rooms, including a suite, queen and four-person rooms, and rooms with a sleeping loft (loft single or loft double).

Every room has beds and a shoes-off floor in a wood-and-Japanese-modern design. The hotel does not say which rooms see the Great Torii, so ask if that matters. Accommodation tax of 200 yen per person per night applies to rates of 6,000 yen or more (room only, before tax).

A bath on tatami, facing the sunset

The bath, “Yu-Like”, is a view bath laid with waterproof tatami mats, which the hotel calls the first of its kind on Miyajima, looking over the Seto Inland Sea towards the sunset. The water is an artificial hot spring made with “Komyo” mineral stone, described as soft and gentle. It is an indoor bath, not an open-air one. Hours for guests are 15:00–1:00 and 5:00–11:00; day-use bathing is suspended. Guests with tattoos, tattoo stickers or body paint are not admitted, and children aged six and over must use the bath of their own sex. For a natural hot spring on the island, see Kinsuikan, its sister inn along the waterfront, or the Miyajima onsen guide.

Dinner, drinks and bread

The buffet was devised with chef Masayuki Okuda of the restaurant Al-ché-cciano, known in Japan for regional cooking, and the hotel’s own head chef, Hideki Ishioka. It is Italian- and French-leaning food from Hiroshima vegetables, seafood and Hiroshima beef, with dishes finished at an open kitchen. Beer, local sake, whisky, shochu and wine are included at dinner.

Dinner 17:30–21:00, last entry 19:00; 11,000 yen including tax and service. Times can vary by day.

Breakfast 7:30–10:00, last entry 9:00; 3,850 yen; with bread from the hotel’s bakery.

Allergies: dishes carry allergen symbols, but because it is a buffet from one kitchen the hotel does not make individual allergy meals. Tell it at least five days ahead if you have an allergy.

Beyond meals, the guest lounge Komorebi (7:00–1:00) has a fireplace, a library and free coffee, tea and juice. The bar Kura Vitto (9:00–23:00) serves Sakurao gin from Hatsukaichi, local craft beer, tapas and oyster pizza, and the bakery Shimauma Pan (9:00–17:00) is known for its Miyajima blueberry bread, sold in a box as a souvenir. Check with the hotel whether the bar is open to non-guests on your day.

Who it suits

It suits couples and friends who want beds, a casual dinner with drinks included and the shortest possible walk from the boat, and travellers who would find a ryokan’s fixed dinner and futons too formal. It is less suited to anyone who wants a natural onsen, an open-air bath or a traditional kaiseki dinner: for those, look at Kinsuikan, Iwaso or Miyajima Grand Hotel Arimoto. The Hiroden streetcar from Hiroshima also ends at the Miyajimaguchi terminal; see Miyajimaguchi. If you bring a car on the ferry (one way from 800 yen for a car under 3 m, driver included), the hotel has parking; call it when you board. It is usually easier to leave the car at Miyajimaguchi, as the island has no visitor parking and narrow roads (parking guide).

Frequently asked questions

Is Hotel Miyajima Villa an actual villa?

No. “Villa” translates its Japanese name, Miyajima Bessō (“holiday house”). It is a hotel with ordinary rooms, all with beds.

Does Hotel Miyajima Villa have an onsen?

It has an indoor view bath with artificial hot-spring water and a tatami floor, open to guests 15:00–1:00 and 5:00–11:00. It is not a natural spring and not open-air, and it does not admit guests with tattoos.

How far is it from the ferry?

It is next to the island’s ferry pier. Itsukushima Shrine is along the waterfront from there.

Are drinks really free at dinner?

The hotel says beer, local sake, whisky, shochu and wine are included at the dinner buffet. The guest lounge also has free soft drinks, 7:00 to 1:00.

When is Hotel Miyajima Villa closed?

From 14 to 18 December 2026, for maintenance. The bar and bakery close on those days as well.

Is the Villa good for a first night on the island?

If you want beds, an easy arrival and a relaxed dinner, yes; the evening itself, with the torii lit until 23:00, is in Miyajima at night. If not, a day trip covers the main sights.

Sources: Hotel Miyajima Villa (official website in Japanese: concept and history, rooms, bath and hours, tattoo rule, cuisine, meal times and prices, allergy policy, lounge, bar, bakery, check-in and check-out, access and car ferry fares, closure notice, accommodation tax notice).
